What is a fever?

What exactly is a fever and why is it a problem if I have one? A fever is something that almost everyone has had and can be a problem if not treated. A lot of people recognize the temperature of 98.6 F being the standard for a normal temperature. However, this is not always true and there is so much to learn about something as seemingly simple as a fever.

What does a fever do?

When your body temperature rises over 100.4 F this is usually an indication of a fever. What causes a fever can vary but it is usually from a foreign invader. There is something that the body is fighting and trying to get rid of. The way the body does this is by raising its temperature to something that is higher and should potentially expel those foreign invaders. In other words, your body develops a fever because it is trying to get rid of what should not belong in your body.

What should I do?

Firstly, it is important to note that a normal body temperature can range from 97 F to 99 F. Then it is typically good to get lots of rest, stay hydrated and take any necessary medications. Remember, having a fever shows that your body is fighting off sickness, and by doing these things you are aiding in the fight.
