What is the delta variant?

Have you heard of the delta variant of the highly contagious SARS-CoV-2 virus strain? If you have then you probably have some questions as to what it is and if you should be concerned. Health is always important so staying informed and up to date can be a very important aspect to living a healthy life.

What exactly is the delta variant?

The delta variant is a variant of what most people know to be the COVID-19 virus. What makes it different is that it has mutated and evolved to be significantly more contagious than other strains. The first known case of it was identified in India in December 2020. Since then, a case has been diagnosed in the United States in March and as of today has become the dominant strain. This shows just how strong that mutation is and that the delta variant is more contagious. The reason this happens is that as time goes viruses evolve and undergo changes as they replicate. So this was expected to happen in one way or another but is still a serious problem.

What should I do?

Staying up to date with all of the current guidelines should be a person’s best bet of staying safe. Those who are unvaccinated are at a higher risk of contracting this virus while those who are vaccinated are typically safer. Also, keeping the same rules followed when the COVID-19 pandemic first started could also help. If you are in a high-risk group such as being older age it could be a good idea to wear a mask and avoid large public gatherings especially if they are indoors.
